INNOVATION WHEN IT IS NEEDED MOST

As the novel COVID-19 virus began to take hold, Maine’s personal protective equipment (PPE) reserves were dwindling fast. MaineHealth, needed to build its pandemic supply of N95 respirators to ensure the safety of care team members and preserve its ability to care for patients amidst rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases.

A VISION FOR RURAL MAINE

A shortage of local eye care specialists in the Norway, Maine, area has led to an increase in the threat of diabetic retinopathy, a preventable cause of blindness in diabetic patients. Brian Nolan, MD, an Internal Medicine Physician at Western Maine Primary Care in Norway, saw an opportunity to conduct retinopathy screenings during routine primary care appointments.

Close calls in the emergency department inspired Will to start designing the Rescue Vac, a portable suction device for healthcare professionals, teachers and even parents.
