Jeremy Qualls, PhD, Dean of the College of Science, Technology, and Health and Professor of Physics at the University of Southern Maine (USM), has been a key figure in fostering innovation through his collaboration with MaineHealth and USM’s Maker Innovation Studio (MIST Lab).

Jeremy’s interest in innovation began in childhood, evolving into a career focused on translating creative ideas into technical solutions. With his expertise and a pool of approximately 100 skilled individuals from diverse specialties, Jeremy effectively leverages the resources of the MIST Lab and Surrell Labs at USM and plays a crucial role in setting advisory goals for projects and addressing challenges as they arise.

MaineHealth employees are encouraged to utilize this valuable resource. Jeremy emphasizes, “Anyone in the MaineHealth system should feel comfortable with the Maker Innovation Studio and its prototyping capabilities, as well as confident in proposing ideas.” He is committed to exploring any idea, irrespective of its potential financial return.

Looking ahead, Jeremy is optimistic about the growth of the partnership between USM and MaineHealth. His future goal is to bring collaborative projects to market and proudly say, “Hey, we did this together.” His goal is to create a lasting impact on healthcare in Maine and foster a culture of innovation that benefits both the local and broader healthcare communities.

Jeremy considers his work with MaineHealth Innovation a highlight of his career, eagerly anticipating the day a product developed through this partnership is introduced to hospitals, marking a significant milestone in their collaborative efforts.
