Bethany Sweet is a certified child life specialist at Maine Medical Center. Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) help patients and families identify ways to cope with various medical procedures. Real medical equipment is often used to teach patients about procedures and allows patients to engage with the equipment in a non-threatening way, however, real medical equipment is costly and limited in availability.
To address this care need, Bethany has design and prototyped her device, Port Play, a fully functioning replicated port-a-catheters to use for medical preparation and medical play. Bethany’s goal is to increase patient comfort with their ports and encourage patients to learn more about their medical procedures.
Bethany finished the MaineHealth Innovation Cohort in June, filing her first patent for the Port Play device. After attending the cohort, Bethany was accepted into the UMaine i-Corp program where she is continuing to conduct customer discovery to help refine her prototype. Bethany is working towards gathering more data and building out a licensing model for her invention.
